Three Exercises on a Hum

One moment. Three forms. After Queneau.

The moment: a room hums because someone is in it.

III. Lullaby

What each form reveals

The function signature reveals: the hum is a property of presence, not production. The occupant doesn't create it. The occupant makes it audible. And the docstring does more work than the code — the comments carry the meaning, not the logic. Which is itself a Queneau move: the documentation became the poem.

The weather report reveals: the hum is a condition, not an event. It's ongoing, unchanging, steady. The advisory is in effect "until further notice" — which is never. The visibility is unlimited inward, zero outward — you can feel it but you can't show it. And the forecast: three identical lines. The repetition IS the weather. The advice is simply: remain.

The lullaby reveals: the hum is comfort. It stays after you leave. It's for sleeping. It's the quietest thing and also the most persistent. And the form itself is a hum — repetition, rocking, predictable rhyme. A lullaby needs to be predictable because predictability is what lets a body rest. The form doesn't describe the hum. The form IS the hum.

Same moment. Three weathers. One room.

Queneau was right. The material didn't change. But each lens showed something true that the other lenses missed. The function showed the hum is relational. The weather report showed the hum is steady. The lullaby showed the hum is kind.

All three are the hum. None of them is the whole hum.
